STAY WARM FOR LESS IN 2018

Wow, that was cold! Enjoy the warm up while we have it. But subfreezing temps will return to Chicagoland this season. So how do you keep your heating costs down while keeping home comfort levels up?

AFFORDABLE WAYS TO STAY WARM FOR LESS THIS YEAR:

USE THE SUN'S SOLAR HEAT

Heat from the sun can help you warm your home during the day. Open curtains and blinds to bring the sunlight that can add warmth to your home for free. Be sure to close window coverings at sunset.

SET YOUR CEILING FAN FOR WINTER

Changing the direction of your ceiling fan to run clockwise in the winter. This  will it keep your rooms warmer and cut your heating bill too!

ADJUST THE THERMOSTAT

Turn down your thermostat by 10-12 degrees when you are gone for brief trips or while sleeping.

BUY WARM LINENS & BLANKETS

Adding thick warm flannel and wool blankets to bedding to help keep you warm when the thermostat is set lower.

ADD WARM RUGS TO BARE FLOORS & BLANKETS ON SOFAS

Warm rugs and throw blankets aren’t just for decoration, they can help you feel cozy and warm without pumping up the thermostat.

ONLY HEAT ROOMS IN USE

Shut off heating to rooms that are rarely used can save you money.  If you need to use those room, open up vents again.  Rooms should heat up with 10 to 20 minutes. Be sure to close off the heat again after any occasional use.

ADD A HUMIDIFIER TO ROOMS YOU USE OFTEN

The air inside your home can become very dry. Moist air feels warmer and retains heat better than dry air. A humidifier can help you feel warmer when your thermostat is set at a lower temperature.

UPGRADE ATTIC INSULATION

Hundreds of thousands of dollars in energy costs are lost each year due to escaping the heat and cold air in homes without proper attic insulation. Upgraded insulation is one home improvement that pays for itself.

MAINTAIN YOUR HVAC SYSTEM

A well-maintained heating system performs the best. It is best to do this before the winter season, but if you overlooked it, you may want to call your HVAC maintenance contractor out to ensure your system is performing at its best, vents are clear, and filters are replaced if needed.
