WIND CHILL ADVISORY ISSUED FOR CHICAGO & SUBURBS

Is your home ready for really cold weather? As sub-freezing temperatures move into the area, keeping your home cozy and warm can be more challenging, especially if your home is not adequately insulated.

5 SIGNS YOU MAY NEED BETTER INSULATION

High Energy Bills

High energy bills often indicate poor insulation. Inadequate attic insulation can cause you to run your heating system longer in order to achieve comfortable living spaces in your home.

Rooms That Heat Slowly

If you notice certain rooms heat slower than other rooms or if your furnace seems to run constantly, it is likely your insulation is either compressed, disturbed, or insufficient.

Rapid Snowmelt on Your Roof

If snow on your roof melts quickly after a snowfall, your roof and attic are too warm.  Fast melting snow can lead to ice damming, which can do significant and costly damage to your roof and home structure.

Damp or Wet Insulation

If insulation becomes moist, damp, or wet it will not provide proper insulation. It must be replaced. Wet insulation is often due to moisture condensation, a roof leak, or due to bathroom or dryer exhaust venting into the attic. Additionally, moisture in your attic can lead to mold and mildew problems. Good insulation coupled with proper attic ventilation can help keep insulation dry and protect your attic from moisture related issues.

Cold Drafts

Compressed or uneven insulation can lead to cool air drafts. When there isn’t a sufficient barrier between the outside air and inside air, cold drafts can infiltrate living spaces. Evenly installed insulation and sealing air gaps can dramatically reduce drafts.

ATTIC INSULATION PAYS FOR ITSELF

Upgrading your attic insulation can pay for itself in one or two seasons, depending on your current level of insulation, the weather, and how often your run your heating system.
