ATTIC MOISTURE IN WINTER – YES, AGAIN!

We often blog about attic moisture in the winter. Why? Because, during the winter, we get a lot of calls concerning ice dams and/or frost in the attic.  And most of the calls come to us only after (avoidable and costly) damage has already been done.

DON’T BE TOO BUSY TO NOTICE

During the holidays and shortly after, people are busy often giving little thought to what may be going on over their heads. It can be easy to overlook a looming problem up in the attic when you are focused on shoveling the driveway or getting the kids back to school. But the sooner you do, the better off you will be. Take time out to inspect your attic in winter. This simple inspection may save you considerable repair costs down the road. Trust us, we see it all the time.

ATTIC MOISTURE CAN BE CONFUSING

Attic moisture in winter can be very confusing. Your home may seem warm and dry. Where does the moisture come from? Why isn’t moisture a problem in summer on humid days? If you are asking yourself these questions, you are not alone. Many homeowners are unaware of moisture related issues in winter.

A STUDY ON ATTIC MOISTURE

There is a very thorough study conducted by Cornell University on this subject. The study does a good job explaining how attic moisture can occur, as well as detailing the resulting damage done by attic moisture if left unaddressed.

IGNORING ATTIC MOISTURE IS A MISTAKE

If you notice moisture in your attic (either wet wood or wet insulation), don’t ignore the problem because it will only get worse and more expensive to correct.
