THIS CRAZY WEATHER WE ARE HAVING

Chicagoland weather, the old saying “don’t bother complaining about it, just wait ten minutes and it will change” sure does apply this month!

The freezing temps followed by unseasonably warm temperatures is a wild roller coaster we have all been on for weeks now.

WHAT IS THIS WEATHER DOING TO YOUR HOME?

But what is this crazy weather doing to your home? Many homeowners found that after the deep freeze, there was a rapid melting, then a refreeze. Many complained they had more icicles compared to the last several years. For some it was just the result of this rapidly changing weather, for others it was a problem with their attic. A problem that could lead to costly damage due to Ice Dams. Click here to learn more about ice dams>

DO YOU HAVE A HOT ATTIC?

Fast melting snow and ice on your roof may be a sign that your attic is not properly ventilated. While it may seem counter-intuitive, your attic during winter should be cold. It is best to keep your heated air in living spaces because these days, it isn’t cheap!

GOOD ATTIC VENTILATION IN WINTER

So how do you keep your attic cool in winter without losing heated air? Proper attic insulation and good attic ventilation. Good air ventilation in winter helps protect your home in a couple of important ways. First, it helps minimize moisture build up.

In winter when doors and window are kept closed, moisture from cooking, cleaning, and bathing can rise into your attic. Overtime the moisture can accumulate on insulation and wood surfaces including roof structures. This is often how attic mold becomes a problem. Good attic ventilation helps to dissipate vapors and prevent moisture buildup. Click here to learn more>

Secondly, a cool attic will allow snow and ice on your roof to melt slowly due to ambient temperatures. A hot attic can cause rapid melting of ice and snow, the volume of water can be too much for gutters and downspouts. As a result, gutters and downspouts can fill. When temps drop again it may freeze causing a dam for future melts. When that happens, water can seep under shingles and through crack in the eave. If the winter is long, the damage can be significant. Attic ventilation can keep your attic cool, allowing ice and snow to melt slower so that it can be properly managed by your gutter and downspout system.
