SEPTEMBER IS CHILDHOOD CANCER AWARENESS MONTH
It’s been a rough year so far for most of us, but can you imagine a year like this and a kid with cancer?
Cancer doesn’t take a break, not even during a pandemic like the wicked virus that has turned all of our lives upside down and inside out.
Our ongoing support for Childhood Cancer is personal. Our nephew Jonathon was diagnosed with Unresectable Anaplastic Astrocytoma – a brain tumor at 10 years old. Until that fateful day, childhood cancer was something we had only heard about in the news.
We have been blessed by the care teams and support that Jonathon has received over the years. It is truly remarkable. We are one of the lucky families, our Jonathon is a childhood cancer survivor. But there are many other children still fighting the scary and painful plight.
WHAT WE LEARNED ABOUT CHILDHOOD CANCER
Through the process, we all learned a lot about childhood cancer. The most surprising fact was how little funding childhood specific cancer research is funded. While millions of dollars are donated to cancer research each year, only a small portion is directed specifically to childhood cancers.
25,000 KIDS THIS MONTH & EVERY MONTH!
Did you know that every two minutes a child is diagnosed with cancer? That means 25,000 kids around the world will hear the words “you have cancer” this month alone.
WHAT IS CHILDHOOD CANCER AWARENESS MONTH?
Families, caregivers, charities, and research groups across the United States observe the month of September as Childhood Cancer Awareness Month. In the U.S., 15,780 children under the age of 21 are diagnosed with cancer every year; approximately 1/4 of them will not survive the disease.
