ATTIC MOLD SHOULD BE REMOVED

If you discover mold in your attic, on the sheathing or other structures, it can be a serious problem. Even if you infrequently use the attic, you should have mold professionally removed.

MOLD IS UNHEALTHY

For those suffering from allergies, advanced health issues, or auto-immune disease, mold can lead to serious breathing problems and deterioration of health.

Common symptoms of mold exposure include coughing, wheezing, and nasal and throat irritation, or congestion. People with asthma or allergies to mold may experience more severe symptoms, and those with weakened immune systems may develop fungal respiratory infections.

MOLD CAN HOLD UP A HOME SALE

If you have mold in your attic and are selling your home, it will likely be flagged by a home inspector. Most buyers will want the mold removed before agreeing to purchase the property.

HOW DOES MOLD GROW IN THE ATTIC?

Attic mold is typically the result of insufficient attic ventilation. As mentioned in recent blog posts, attic moisture can lead to attic mold growth. Mold only requires two things to thrive; moisture and organic materials including dust, paper, cardboard, and wood. Your ceiling, made of drywall, is exposed on the back side to your attic, providing ample sustenance to mold colonies when moisture is also available.

ATTIC MOLD PREVENTION

Keeping your attic dry is the number one way to prevent attic mold. And proper attic ventilation is an affordable way to do this. Many homes in the Chicago area don’t have adequate intake and exhaust vents. Adding soffit or under eave vents coupled with roof vents, or an attic fan can help keep your attic dry in winter and reduce attic heat build-up in summer.

WOOD ROT & MOLD

Moisture and mold left unaddressed can lead to rotting wood including roof sheathing and supporting structures. Once rot begins, a new roof and costly repairs are certain.

PROTECT YOUR ATTIC

Proper attic ventilation will protect against moisture and mold, keep your attic cooler in summer saving you on cooling costs, and will extend the life of your roof.
