WHAT IS THAT SCARY NOISE IN YOUR ATTIC?

The Halloween season is upon us! But that noise in your attic is probably not a ghost and not much fun! More likely, you have an attic infestation.

WHY ARE CRITTERS IN YOUR ATTIC?

In the fall, wildlife critters in the area begin sourcing shelter for the coming winter months. Home attics are a common target for wildlife critters.

Raccoons, Squirrels, Rats, and Bats are clever, resourceful, and determined creatures. They use their sharp teeth and powerful claws to tear through wood and metal to gain access to attic spaces.

WILDLIFE CRITTERS CAN BE DESTRUCTIVE & DANGEROUS

Critters that infest your attic can be very destructive and wreak havoc on your home. Once vermin access your attic, they typically gather materials (including clothing, paper goods, cardboard, or insulation) to build a nest for their offspring. They also source a latrine (yes, it is what you think it is – a place away from the nest to do their business).

If you suspect you have an attic infestation, be careful when accessing your attic space. You don’t want to alarm wild critters. Scared creatures can respond defensively. And, please don’t attempt to remove critters from your attic yourself. These vermin, however cute they may seem, can be viciously dangerous and can do significant harm to humans if surprised or approached. WILDLIFE CRITTERS CARRY INSECTS AND DISEASE

Vermin feces and urine can carry diseases and bacteria harmful to humans. They also carry insects, including lice, fleas, and mites that can transfer down to living spaces and infest household pets. In addition, the CDC warns that some animals even carry the plague. Wild animals like raccoons, squirrels, rats, and mice also carry rabies. Click here to read more from the CDC.

HOW TO PREVENT ATTIC INFESTATIONS

Here are some simple things you can do to protect your home from attic infestations:

  1. Make sure your attic vents, including any attic fan vents, are protected with bird and vermin-proof screening
  2. Put gutter guards on the end of your gutters to block vermin access via your gutters
  3. Minimize access to cutting away trees and bushes that are close to the building
  4. Remove any items that allow vermin easy access to the exterior of your home
  5. Keep trash cans away from the building
  6. Do not leave pet food outdoors
  7. If you want to feed  birds, be sure feeders have been installed at least 30ft from the home
  8. Repair any damaged or loose soffit siding or soffit vents
  9. Inspect your roof for damage regularly throughout the year
  10. Inspect your attic for signs of animal activity each season
