ATTIC MOLD

You should annually inspect your attic for signs of mold. While the smell of mildew can be an indicator, mold growth doesn’t always have an odor. Look for dark stains on the underside of roof sheathing. Check corners and crevices, especially around cardboard boxes.

HOW MOLD GROWS

Mold requires moisture, moderate temperatures, and a source of energy to grow. Wood, cardboard, clothing, dust, leaves and other organic components provide the needed energy source. As such, it is recommend you minimize attic storage as much as possible.

ATTIC MOLD PREVENTION

The best way to minimize attic mold is to ensure your attic is dry, year round. Proper attic air circulation is the key to keeping your attic dry year round. Click here to learn more about proper attic ventilation.

BATHROOM MOLD

Bathroom mold can also be a problem, especially for bathrooms that don’t have windows that can be opened to allow air flow. Again, mold does not always emit an odor. Bathroom mold can be found behind toilets, walls, light fixtures, under the sink, and around the tub and/or shower. Mold may not always be visible. Mold can grow under tile, behind baseboards, walls, behind and under cabinetry, and in light fixtures.

Addressing bathroom mold early on can dramatically reduce the impact of mold. Mold can spread rapidly if moisture is not addressed, and can lead to extensive repairs.

The best way to prevent bathroom mold is to prevent standing water and by removing water vapors by installing a bathroom exhaust fan. Bath exhaust fans pull the moist air out of the bathroom. Properly installed bathroom fans exhaust to the outside; bath fans should never exhaust into the attic as this will just transfer the problem from the bathroom to the attic.
