IT’S BACK-TO-SCHOOL SEASON & A GOOD TIME TO PLAN FALL HOME MAINTENANCE

Kids lugging backpacks and the distinctive sound of school buses making their way through the neighborhood have returned. Trees are changing color, leaves are falling as days grow shorter and temperatures drop.

Whether you have children or not, Back to School season is a good time to reorganize and prepare for fall activities. It can also be a good time to plan and schedule home maintenance tasks that are best done while the weather is still warm and mostly dry.

ANNUAL FALL HOME MAINTENANCE TASKS

  • Make Sure Gutters Are Clear of Debris
  • Check Your Roof for Damage, Cracking, or Peeling Shingles
  • Test Your Fireplace
  • Inspect Your Water Heater for Signs of Leaks
  • Change Batteries in all Fire and Carbon Monoxide Detectors
  • Check Your Attic for Mold or Signs of Animal Infestations
  • Inspect Major Appliances for Signs of Trouble
  • Make Sure Bath Fans and Dryers are Exhausting Outdoors (not in the attic)

MAKE A LIST OF PROJECTS YOU HAVE BEEN PUTTING OFF

There are always annual tasks to complete in the fall, but each homeowner has a list running in their head of things they may have been putting off during the summer months.  Now is a good time to jot those tasks down and commit to a schedule for getting them done before the cold and rainy days of fall dominate your days.

WHEN TO HIRE A CONTRACTOR

If you are not handy or familiar with a task, or maybe your schedule is just too packed to get to specific tasks, you may want to hire a contractor to do some of the work.  There are several good sources these days for finding a contractor. Most sources include reviews and feedback on prospective contractors.  Neighbors, friends, and family are also often good resources for a local contractor.

SCHEDULE REPAIRS AS NEEDED

Once you have completed your annual inspection, schedule any repair work you plan to hire out, as early as possible to ensure you get on your contractor’s schedule before the fall rush.

ATTIC INSULATION

Did your heating bills get out of control last winter? Did you have some rooms that took longer to heat and stay warm than others? If so, this could indicate a problem with your insulation.

Periodic attic insulation inspections can reveal insulation problems. You may find your attic is not insulated to recommended levels for peak efficiency and comfort. Upgrading your attic insulation can cut heating bills and increase comfort. For rooms that take longer to heat, pay close attention to the insulation above those spaces. If insulation is disturbed or damaged it may need to be redistributed or replaced to ensure proper performance. Click here to learn more about attic insulation>
