IT’S THAT TIME OF YEAR AGAIN
Now that the kids are back in school, it’s that time again to conduct your fall home maintenance tasks and prepare your home for winter. Here are some tips for Chicago area homeowners to consider.
ANNUAL FALL HOME MAINTENANCE TASKS
- Make Sure Gutters Are Clear of Debris
- Check Your Roof for Damage, Cracking, or Peeling Shingles
- Test Your Fireplace
- Inspect Your Water Heater for Signs of Leaks
- Change Batteries in all Fire and Carbon Monoxide Detectors
- Check Your Attic for Mold or Signs of Animal Infestations
- Inspect Major Appliances for Signs of Trouble
- Make Sure Bath Fans and Dryers are Exhausting Outdoors (not in the attic)
MAKE A LIST OF PROJECTS YOU HAVE BEEN PUTTING OFF
There are always annual tasks to complete in the fall, but each homeowner has a list running in their head of things they may have been putting off during the summer months. Now is a good time to jot those tasks down and commit to a schedule for getting them done before the cold and rainy days of fall dominate your days.
WHEN TO HIRE A CONTRACTOR
If you are not handy or familiar with a task, or maybe your schedule is just too packed to get to certain tasks, you may want to hire a contractor to do some of the work. There are several good sources these days for finding a contractor including HomeAdvisor, Angie’s List, and Thumbtack. Most of these sources include reviews and feedback on prospective contractors. Neighbors, friends, and family are also often a good resource for a local contractor.
SCHEDULE REPAIRS AS NEEDED
Once you have completed your annual inspection, schedule any repair work you plan to hire out, as early as possible to ensure you get on your contractor’s schedule before the fall rush.
